ROBIN CHESNUT-TANGERMAN
2nd Amendment Stance: EXTREMELY ANTI-GUN
District: Rutland-Bennington
(Vote for 1)
Contest: For State Representative (WIN)
Party: Democratic

2nd Amendment Stance, Legislative Action and Voting History:
Democratic House party on 9/17/14: States he WANTS Universal Background Checks.
Pawlet Firehouse Firearm information forum on 10/8/14: States he WANTS Universal Background Checks.
Uses the "Common Sense" slogan loved by Gun Control Advocates.
Quotes GUNSENSE STATISTICS and GUNSENSE POLLS as justification for his position.
Publishes in the Rutland Herald 10/13/14, he again states he WANTS Universal Background Checks, AND supports 'closing the gun show loophole' (that doesn't exist in Vermont), and yet his position is somehow being 'distorted' by the people he directly wants to enact laws against?

Additional Comments: Universal Background Checks = Registration
Even after the president of Gun Owners of Vermont PERSONALLY explained the entire details of what Universal Background Checks will mean and the only way they can enforced at his 'house party' in Middletown Springs, AND sitting through a 90 minute discussion panel with 3 senators, a House representative, law enforcement and firearms experts, he STANDS UP IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA and states 'I do favor Universal Background Checks', 'they are an important tool for Law Enforcement to do their job.'
Vermont does NOT HAVE A LAW ON THE BOOKS that makes POSSESSION a crime!
Universal Background Checks will CREATE THAT LAW.
He says he supports the Second Amendment (in Vermont it is Article 16, but he doesn't know that), but quotes GUNSENSE STATISTICS and GUNSENSE POLLS as justification for his position!

Gun Forum

I had the interesting experience tonight of attending a Gun Forum at the Pawlet Fire House. Prior to the forum I grabbed a bite to eat at Mach’s Market and had the pleasure of talking with Republican Senator Joe Benning from Caledonia County who had driven south for the forum. I introduced myself as a candidate for the House from this district, on both the Progressive and Democratic ballots.

What followed was a great conversation on the need to transcend party politics and work together - he mentioned specifically that he was the lead sponsor on a bill authored by Progressive/Democrat Senator David Zuckerman. Our legislators all need this broad perspective to work effectively. Open mindedness is one of my strengths.

The Gun Forum was billed as a non-partisan information session, but given the make-up of the panel and the crowd, which was adamantly opposed to any new gun legislation at all, it was less educational and more preaching to the choir. Opinions expressed by the audience ranged from the moderate “Don’t change anything” to absolute certainty that this is the most important issue of our times and any attempt to improve background checks is just one small step away from confiscating our guns. There was great emphasis on turning out the vote and writing to representatives.

The evening ended with all candidates in the audience given the opportunity to briefly state their position in regard to firearms. The candidates present stood and expressed their support for keeping the status quo until I rose for my turn. I thanked them for the session and the opportunity to speak, and I articulated my support for universal background checks as a means of keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. People were polite, and afterwards a few thanked me for having the courage to stand up and speak honestly. This usually came in the form of, “I’m not voting for you but I appreciate...”
This was an interesting and informative evening that I hope to not repeat any time soon.

Four minutes later he removed the 'that I hope to not repeat any time soon' line.

Robin Chesnut-Tangerman on Gun Ownership

This note is from Robin Chesnut-Tangerman who is running for the Rutland-Bennington District House seat regarding gun ownership:
Individuals have a right to their opinion, but when that opinion is not factual or informed I find myself bound to set the record straight. I am a gun owner. As I’ve been knocking on doors in our legislative district, I am sometimes greeted by people who have heard, somewhere, that I am anti-gun. Like our right to freedom of speech, our right to bear arms is balanced by responsibilities and limitations. Those who have committed violent crimes have shown that they do not or cannot accept these responsibilities, and they should lose the right to own a gun. Like the great majority of Vermonters, I support background checks for gun purchases, including closing the gun show loophole. As a gun owner, I willingly accept the inconvenience of a background check to keep guns out of criminal hands. That’s my stance on the gun issue. The Castleton Polling Institute reports that 71% of VT gun owners and 81% of non-gun owners also support that position. This narrow focus on guns is a distraction from other critical concerns that affect all of us: education, taxes, health care, jobs and quality of life. We need people in Montpelier who can respond to the many complex issues facing our state. I will work hard to ensure our voices are heard. And when you talk to me, you will know I am telling you the truth.

'Clarifying stance on guns
I am a gun owner. I support our constitutional right to bear arms. But I also believe that right is balkanced by responsibilities. In the race for representative for the Vermont House, my position on the Second Amendment is being distorted and distracting us from crucial issues like jobs and health care.
Like the great majority of Vermonters, I support background checks for gun purchases, including closing the gun show loophole. Those who have committed violent crimes have shown that they do not or cannot accept the responsibilities of gun ownership, and they should lose the right to own one.'

Continued: 'As a gun owner, I willingly accept the inconvenience of a background check to keep guns out of criminal hands. (comment: The same EXACT wording was first heard at a GunSense meeting on 10/9/14)
That's my stance on the gun issue. The Castleton Polling Institute reports that 71 percent of Vermont gun owner and 81 percent of non-gun owners also support that position.
I will work hard to ensure our voices are heard. And when you talk to me, you will know I am telling the truth.'
Comment: How can a representative for office objectively believe a poll funded by GunSense VT as FACT in his campaign, QUOTE GunSense talking points, and use GunSense statistics, and yet say his position is being distorted?
