Additional Comments: Letter to the Rutland Herald:
Thanks to the Herald for the chance to discuss the issues facing the residents of Bridgewater, Chittenden, Killington and Mendon in Thursday's article, "Office seekers refine views." I would like to clarify my position on one point, however.
Although the article may have led you to believe that my opponent, Anne Gallivan, and I agree on increasing Vermont's gun regulations, I assure you that this is not so. Anne Gallivan has received support and funding from Gunsense VT: a political action committee devoted to making universal background checks mandatory in Vermont. I strongly oppose this expansion of government power. Instituting universal background checks is a probable first step toward a public gun registry, which could make firearm owners vulnerable to targeted robberies, protests, and government surveillance.
When it comes to gun violence, ours is consistently one of the safest states in the Union. Why tinker with a system that could be a model for other states? Many residents in my district own firearms -- some are hunters, some recreational shooters, and others simply individuals who have made a legal choice to protect their families.
With each legislative session, Montpelier grows bolder in extending its reach into the lives of everyday Vermonters. I look forward to being the voice that speaks out against these needless intrusions, whether in the area of taxation, health care, education, or our Second Amendment rights.
